How to Install Voice Chat on Your Minecraft Server

Published on July 29, 2026

Simple Voice Chat adds proximity-based voice chat to your Minecraft server. Players who are close to each other can hear one another. As players move farther apart, their voices become quieter. Simple Voice Chat can be installed as a plugin on Paper, Purpur and Spigot or as a mod on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. In this guide, we explain how to install and configure Simple Voice Chat on your Minecraft server.

Note This guide is only intended for Minecraft Java Edition. Every player who wants to use voice chat must also install Simple Voice Chat locally as a mod. Without the client mod, players can still join the server, but they cannot use voice chat.

Installing Simple Voice Chat as a Plugin

Are you using Paper, Purpur or Spigot? Install Simple Voice Chat as a plugin.

  1. Log in to the game panel and go to your Minecraft server.
  2. Open the Plugins page.
  3. Search for Simple Voice Chat using the search bar.
  4. Click the install icon and select the plugin version.
  5. Click Install Plugin.
  6. Restart the Minecraft server using the grey restart button and wait until the server has fully restarted.

During this restart, Simple Voice Chat automatically creates the required configuration file.

Installing Simple Voice Chat as a Mod

Are you using Fabric, Forge or NeoForge? Install Simple Voice Chat as a mod.

  1. Log in to the game panel and go to your Minecraft server.
  2. Open the Mods page.
  3. Select CurseForge as the provider and search for Simple Voice Chat.
  4. Click the install icon and select the mod version compatible with your server software.
  5. Click Install Mod.
  6. Restart the Minecraft server using the grey restart button and wait until the server has fully restarted.

During this restart, Simple Voice Chat automatically creates the required configuration file.

Creating an Extra Port for Simple Voice Chat

Simple Voice Chat transmits audio through a separate UDP port. You therefore need to create an extra port.

  1. Open the Ports page in the game panel.
  2. Click Create port.
  3. Make a note of the extra port number. You will need it to configure Simple Voice Chat.
Tip You can identify the extra port by the button used to remove it. For more information, read our guide on adding an extra port.

Configuring the Extra Port in Simple Voice Chat

  1. Open the Files page in the game panel.
  2. Depending on how you installed Simple Voice Chat, go to the configuration file:
  • Plugin: Open the plugins folder and then the voicechat folder.
  • Mod: Open the config folder and then the voicechat folder.
  1. Open the voicechat-server.properties file by clicking its filename.
  2. Find the following line:
properties
port=24454
  1. Replace 24454 with the extra port you created in the game panel. For example, if the extra port number is 12345, the line becomes:
properties
port=12345
  1. Make sure the value after bind_address= remains empty:
properties
bind_address=
  1. Save the file.
  2. Restart the Minecraft server using the grey restart button and wait until the server has fully restarted.

Installing Simple Voice Chat for Players

Every player who wants to use voice chat must install the mod locally. This also applies when Simple Voice Chat is installed as a plugin on the Minecraft server.

  1. Install a supported mod loader, such as Fabric, Forge or NeoForge, for the same Minecraft version as the server.
  2. Open the Simple Voice Chat download page.
  3. Download the mod for the correct Minecraft version and mod loader. Preferably use the same version of Simple Voice Chat as the server.
  4. Place the downloaded .jar file in the mods folder of the corresponding Minecraft installation.
  5. Start Minecraft using the profile for the installed mod loader.
  6. Join the Minecraft server.
  7. Press V to open the Simple Voice Chat configuration menu.
  8. Select the microphone and speakers you want to use.
  9. Choose whether you want to use push-to-talk or automatic voice activation. Then follow the remaining on-screen steps.
