What Are Backup Slots in Minecraft Server Hosting?

Published on July 22, 2026

You may have noticed that you can add backup slots when ordering Minecraft server hosting from ConsulHosting. You will undoubtedly have questions about this. That is why this article answers frequently asked questions about this topic. Is your question still unanswered? Contact us.

What can you do with backup slots?

Backup slots allow you to easily create manual backups and automated backups of your Minecraft server. These backups are stored on ConsulHosting’s servers, making them easy to manage and restore through the game panel.

When do I need backup slots?

Backup slots may be needed in the following situations:

  1. When you want to safeguard your files, for example, in case you accidentally make incorrect changes.
  2. If you experience problems with griefers who may damage your Minecraft server.
  3. If you accidentally delete important files or make changes that you want to undo.
  4. If you want to save a copy or version of a world.
Note Backups are only retained while the service remains active.

How much do backup slots cost?

You can add up to five backup slots per Minecraft server. Each slot costs €0.50 per month, excluding VAT.

How many backup slots do I need?

If you only need a few backups that you create manually, 1 to 3 backup slots will probably be sufficient. However, if you want to create automated backups or retain many backups, choosing 3 to 5 backup slots is more advisable.

What are backup slots not intended for?

  1. Backup slots are not intended to retain a copy of your files after your service has expired or been canceled.
  2. They are also not intended to ensure that you have a copy of your files in the event of force majeure, such as hardware failure or fire, because backups in these slots are generally stored locally, unlike the free automatic backups.
Tip You can easily download backups so that you can also store them yourself, for example, on your computer.

How can I order backup slots later?

  1. Log in to the client area.
  2. Open the Hosting page.
  3. Click the Minecraft server hosting package for which you want to change the number of backup slots.
  4. Under Backup slots, click Upgrade.
  5. Select the desired number of backup slots.
  6. Review the order and complete the upgrade.

Can I create backups without backup slots?

Yes, you can also create backups of your Minecraft server without backup slots. These are your options:

  1. Download one of the free Automatic backups from the overview on the Backups page.
  2. Follow these instructions to create a manual backup using the file manager.
  3. Follow these instructions to create a manual backup using SFTP.

Error message: backup limit is set to 0

Do you see this error message under Manage backups on the Backups page of the game panel?

Backups cannot be created for this server because the backup limit is set to 0.

This error message means that the Minecraft server does not have any backup slots. This is a paid feature that can be added both during the ordering process and later.
